Birthday in the Cotswolds

Coming from a single-child family, my parents made a point of making my birthdays pretty special. On every 18th of August I felt exactly that – pretty f-ing special, the most important person for my parents which is safe to say that I am still are. For the past 3 years, however, I was proven that this day can get even more important. I happened to fall in love with a man who was born on the exact same day, a few years earlier and that changed it all. Ever since we started being together, we doubled our celebrations on the day. The title is kind of giving it away, but let me explain why we decided to go to Cotswolds and not just buy each other gifts.

The older I am, the clearer it becomes that I am a person who values experiences much more than objects. Luckily, Paul is the same so we made a point of going to a place that we always wanted to see instead of exchanging objects for our birthdays. We now share an experience. Last year we went to Paris, my very first time in Paris and it was dream-like even though our romantic birthday dinner took place in a McDonald’s.

Cotswold is the kind of place that I grew up seeing in British movies and thinking that the entire UK is like that. It turned out, I was not quite right in believing that, but once you get anywhere in the British countryside, it is breathtakingly beautiful. I dare you to Google “Cotswold”. That is what I did and then I felt like I needed a doctor because my eyes were only seeing beauty. That can’t be all real, can it?

But it was! Small, charming villages, powdery mint green doors, flowers everywhere as if all houses were ready to be photographed, narrow streets where nobody gets angry- a bliss! I just put this Area of Outstanding Beauty (I didn’t make this up!) on the list of places to take my parents when they come and visit. Imagine how these villages must look during Christmas time! It’s not even mid-October and I’m already thinking of Christmas…typical.

I actually stopped writing at this point, went to my Instagram Highlights section and re-watched my Cotswolds Insta Stories to remember what else happened and where else we’ve been (which you can do as well in case you didn’t already :P) And after watching them, I decided I won’t be trying to explain how beautiful this part of the UK is, and just bombard you with pictures.

Also, the villages that we visited were Bilbury – the best known one, where the picture from Google is taken from, Woodstock where we slept at Crown Inn, Upper-Slaughter and Lower-Slaughter and can’t wait to go back and visit some more.

The summer colour that makes it pop

Who would have thought that I will go crazy over a colour that demands this much attention? It slowly became my favourite summer colour to wear and not only because the dress was made in Romania even though it’s Asos. Yep, another one! The first one I came across was a satin skirt with blue dots from River Island.

And I almost stopped here, but in the meantime I wore 2 more yellow outfits. I wrote this intro more than a month ago and since than, as you might know if you read my last blog post, a few things have changed. So this was supposed to be a post about a collection of outfits, not just one, like I used to do. However, since I decided I made my own rules, I find it kind of boring to write about a yellow outfit so I will tell you a story instead. Scroll to the end of the post if you are only interested in the outfits, though.

This is a story about how I failed to tell my girlfriends that I proposed to Paul. How ironic is it that one of the things that brings me most pleasure in life – writing (and reading for that matter) is also one of the ones I am sometimes terrible at? This is no modesty speaking, I promise!

I don’t seem to have a problem with longer texts, but I am rubbish at conveying short messages. Looking back at how I chose my words when I meant to tell my friends that I proposed to Paul – and that he said yes – I can see there was definitely a better route to choose. I went for the absolute truth…but we are not the most conventional people/ couple if you couldn’t tell already from the fact that I proposed.

Let’s just say that I did not choose the “do you want to be my husband? Yes or no” (gun at the temple- just kidding). I asked him if we wanted to join me on this journey that life is and a lot of other romantic blabber and took the ring out. So this is literally what I told my friends. The “join me on this journey” part…confusing much? We are still laughing about it…possibly in yellow outfits that I will mention again because my SEO seems to like it if I use the key word more often than absolutely necessary for any human being to notice it.

For more pictures of the promised yellow outfits, scroll down:)

Miss Casual is changing!

Long time, no see… because of me, of course. I was feeling for some time like we are doing things out of routine without necessarily enjoying them as we used to when we started. So I took a naughty full month off from writing on the blog to think things out. And man, that’s exactly what we did.

For the longest time I was stuck in the habit of posting daily on Instagram. That is something that we’ll not do anymore. You can still expect to see 2 to 3 posts per week, but better thought out. I need more time to put more soul in them and you know what they say – quality over quantity. Also, you might have noticed that we started toying with the idea of doing videos. That is something that we enjoy tremendously and who knows – maybe I will get over the fear of talking to the camera and actually do it!

The truth about Miss Casual

Now, for the moment of truth. I would be very curious if you don’t know me, what is the impression that you have of me only from what you see on social media. Do you think that Miss Casual is something that I do full time? Because it certainly is not:D

Both Paul and I work 5 days a week – the jobs that pay the rent and everything you see is done in those 2 days off a week. And that is exactly what I want to focus on. What can an absolutely regular person do in those 2 days off?

For the longest time I was tempted to work even harder on those 2 days off, but then so many questions arose: when am I just enjoying life, when do I enjoy the company of my partner (without him being behind the camera)? So that very productive work-wise period has left me longing for a simpler life. I want to feel like I am resting, I want to travel, I want to make videos and actually have the time to edit them with a beer in my hand, not right before I go to work.

Buckle up, enjoy the ride

I was a strong advocate of working in your free time for the life that you want to have in a few years. I always said work smart, not hard…but 2 years later, it all back-fired – I was not working smart. As much as I wanted it to be a marathon, I was reacting as if it was a sprint. I felt like I lost myself and that I was starting to lose the passion that I had for Miss Casual.

So my new solution is so obvious that you probably figured it out a long time ago: enjoy the ride, not just the destination. While we are still thinking things out so change is probably still to come, ever since I took the decision to take it slower and enjoy it more, I feel much more motivated.

What can you expect from Miss Casual?

First thing that comes to my mind are videos. I want to make more of those and actually, the moment I make this post public, I will post a video to Instagram as well. We are going to share more of those 2 days off every week and within our possibilities, travel as much as we can. You will still see personal style content, of course – that is still the main theme of Miss Casual, but put more in a lifestyle context.

I promised that I will be dancing more. If that is something that you are excited to see, head to my Instagram – the video that I mentioned before is a dance one. A complete improvisation, shot in one on the most windy pier – Southend-on-Sea.

When it comes to the blog, I will set a very modest goal for myself – to post once a week. However, I will keep an open mind and in case something comes up that is so exciting that I can’t keep it for myself or an Insta Story, you will definitely see it here.

That being said, buckle up and let’s enjoy the ride together!

Kisses

Are we born with style?

I find myself looking through magazines – currently Harper’s Bazaar, previously Vogue and exclaim from time to time – this model has style! But then I see, at the bottom of the page the name of the stylist…which does not mean that outside of the picture that I see the model doesn’t have style. It just means that I will take the stylist’s name, type it into Instagram and have a curious look at her/his Instagram.

Being surrounded by stylish people, I am pretty sure rubs off. Looking at pictures of outfits from when I was a teenager, I quite hope that good style rubs off and that it can be learned. I would be curious to ask a stylist this question.

Did you expect me to give you an answer for this question? Than I must disappoint you and throw the ball back by asking you – what do you think? Are we born with style or is it something that we can acquire along the way?

Not that is has much to do with style, but I have been binge watching a Vogue fashion series. It is with the International Editor-at-Large, Hamish Bowles who introduces us to his favourite places to buy vintage for his almost life-long collection in the making. Even though I used to, I am not one that has the patience to go thrifting any more, but now I started understanding the charm of it so I might venture into charity shops in the hopes of finding a lost Chanel blazer. Haha, sweet dreams! Did I say how the series are called? Vintage Bowles – if you are just slightly into fashion, I guarantee that you will enjoy it.

P.S. I’d be really curious to see what you think – are we really born with style?

How to wear a white suit 4 ways

Would you think that a white suit is as versatile as I’m going to convince you that it is? From an office look, to a more rock and roll one, to a wedding and a day out with the girls. Do I have your curiosity yet? To be perfectly honest, a white suit was never my first choice. I am quite a practical girl and I wear foundation all the time so for the longest time I stood away from anything white. But, I am now hooked on the trend and I am going with it.

Psst! Don’t tell anybody but I am actually washing my suit in the washing machine at 30 degrees and it kept the shape perfectly. That sounds pretty practical to me, doesn’t it?

Another thing that has always put me off about suits was the fact that they used to be really stiff. Not this one – this white suit will not keep your free spirit in a cage, I promise! Now, I can’t do a full stretching routine in it, which I think is fair enough, but any other natural movement you’d want to do, you won’t be constricted by this one.

Shall we have a look at 4 different ways that I styled the suit? In two of them I am wearing both pieces of the suit, in two I am only wearing the jacket. Which one would you wear the most?

Movies that make you want to travel

Not that there is any time when I am not bitten by the travel bug, but when the weather is nice, I am bitten just a bit harder. So I though, why not ask my friends what are the movies that make them want to travel…in case they need a push for it. I tried not to explain myself too much because I was curious of how their suggestions will fit into categories, but the outcome is much more diverse than I though. It also felt really good having a post written in collaboration with almost 10 people!:D

I have not watched these movies, but I took my friends’ word for them and put them on the list. For those that I was not too sure where exactly will make you want to travel, I watched the trailer – lazy girl, but brace yourself for some conventional and less conventional locations as you are hopefully, already expecting coming from me.

France

Paris – Moulin Rouge – how did I not see this movie? (blushing)

Paris & Monte Carlo – Monte Carlo – an 8 year oldie but it’s one that I watched and made me want to go to Paris so badly and we’ve been last year ! I wouldn’t mind going to Monte Carlo either

French countryside – The Hundred Foot Journey – this is one that makes me want to do a road trip and eat in every single village as well

La vie en rose -Good music and Paris? This one is on my list to watch!

Greece

On an island – Mamma Mia – I am pretty sure there are more movies that will make me want to jump on a plane and head to Greece, but this was the first that I thought of (When I think of Greece, I think of sun, turquoise water, cheerful music and feta cheese)

Italy

Rome – When in Rome – A cheesy romance, but one that is definitely going to cheer you up. Btw – I just wouldn’t get into the fountain

I bet you saw this coming – Roman Holiday – If this movie does not make you want to get on a Vespa and wander on the streets of Rome…I don’t know what will

Under the Tuscan Sun – that’s an impulse buy!

Spain

Barcelona – Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona – fiery at time, but the scenery….

Barcelona – this is one that I haven’t seen but honestly, I would watch anything that happens in Barcelona

India

Slumdog Millionaire – This suggestion comes from somebody who has been to India and she said she watches this movie every time she misses it

Thailand

Ana and the King – ok, this one is a bit “back in time” when Thailand was called Siam, but a beautiful movie that I already recommended to so many

Cambodia

Tomb Raider – this is one that makes me want to go to many places, but the most picturesque seems to be Cambodia

Brazil

City of God – This is my friend’s favourite movie but she has quite a good stomach so don’t expect a romance on the beach, it actually happens in the favelas

New York

This seems to be a favourite for movie makers as well as series – Sex and the City, Gossip Girl, Friends, The Carrie Diaries, you name it! Funny enough, nobody mentioned a movie, even though there are so many

Non-conformist places

Any jungle – Until things go wrong – Jungle and Jumanji

Underwater – Aquaman

Back in time – The Vikings and Apocalypto

In space – Passengers and A wrinkle in time (Let me check with Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos when we can start buying tickets)

Anywhere by train…but without the murder – Murder on the Orient Express

Auschwitz – Schindler’s List

Now this has been a long one in the making. The idea came to us over a coffee and I immediately texted to ask my friends’ on movies that make them want to travel. Paul’s were the weirder ones, of course – the out of space and such, mine the more conventional. I realised that I can read really tough books, but when it comes to movies I tend to choose more comfortable subjects.

But let’s make this a conversation and find all the missing links in my list (please do!) and add new movies that we should all see and daydream about places that hopefully, some day we will actually travel to see in person.

Monthly round-up – car edition

I am the kind of person who doesn’t know how to talk about her problems. Didn’t know. Well, I am forcing myself to talk about them because at the end of the day, they are part of life as well. If you are starting to frown, relax those eyebrows, this monthly round-up isn’t going to be depressing, I promise! That is also because I kind of cheated when it comes to this car issue, because I waited for us to solve the problem before telling you about it.

For everything to make sense, I need to give you some background info about Paul. I have actually checked with him whether he is comfortable with me sharing more about both our personal lives and especially in this situation, his work life.

Background info

Paul has started working for Uber in September last year and because our car only had two doors (aka much, much more affordable than one with 4 doors) it was not appropriate for Uber-ing. I already know that WordPress will want to correct “Uber-ing” but I won’t, because it makes sense to me. So because of this (2 doors), we had to hire a car that was accepted by TFL (Transport for London).

Needless to say that a big part of his earnings went on the rental because you’re not only paying for the car, but for any unpredictable issues you might come across. To be frank, you are overpaying in case you have an accident.

To sell, to buy?

It was clear that we didn’t need two cars and it was even clearer that it’s not worth doing Uber on a rental. The only option was to sell our own car and buy one that we could use both for Uber and personal trips. Easier said than done! It took me a few seconds to write about it, but it took us a few months to actually do it.

Finally in March we were able to sell our own car and started looking for the Uber-appropriate one. I can not emphasise enough how time-consuming this is. How many times did the car that we wanted sell right from under our noses. One time it was as literal as it gets!

We had an appointment that we got to 1 hours early, just in case. It’s only that the “just in case” happened despite our precautions. When we arrived, we saw somebody test-driving it and by the time we got to park the car and got inside to speak to an agent, it was sold! Literally from under our noses! I imagine that buying a house will make buying a car seem like child’s play, but we are not there yet.

The starts have finally aligned…but did they?

It was the 14th of April when we finally found the one! Now, you might be wondering – how come did you not read about this in the April monthly round-up? That would be because we took it for our second ride ever (the first one being from the car dealer, home) when the Emissions light came up in the dashboard. I, of course, did not know what that is, Paul knew a bit more so just to be thoroughly informed, we decided to consult the technical book.

To explain it in a simple manner (not because I knew how to get into technical terms) there was either a problem with the engine or one with the sensor. Keep in mind that we have just bought this car and we took it for our second ride when an issue already came up. I didn’t know how serious it was, but even the calmest person (which I’m not), would go bonkers and paranoid when the technical book says something along the lines: Refrain from driving the vehicle, it might cause serious damage to the engine. Contact a garage immediately!…Bonkers

The light at the end of the tunnel

After endless emails, two garage trips – 17 errors later, I am happy to (finally) say that this is actually like a fairy tale – all’s well when it ends well. We had a hell of a ride – pun intended – but finally, at the end of June our new car is on the roads Uber-ing.

I know I usually make a more general monthly round-up of everything that has happened, but our car issue is something that I have challenged myself to share with you so I hope you don’t mind that I’ve picked a subject and that I went in depth with it.

P.S. If you have Paul as a driver (and you like his driving), first say “hi” from me and then rate him nicely:)

Reinterpreted shirt-dress and retro styling

How many of you have watched Gossip Girl just as much for the outfits as for the intrigue? I absolutely loved it! All the mean girls with their reinterpreted sexy uniforms, Serena with her more relaxed style and then Jenny who always found a solution…my shirt-dress outfit today reminds me of the series especially for the retro styling.

I remember doing marathons with my friends, staying in all day and watching the series. I liked Serena and Dan, another friend liked Blair and Chuck, we had really mixed opinions. What we did agree upon though is that we needed to go raiding the second hand shops / charity shops for interesting looking clothes, even retro looking sometimes that we could wear as if we were in Gossip girl.

Another more recent series where the fashion is absolutely amazing is Marvelous Mrs Maisel. I might be in a retro mood now, but honestly this is what inspires me the most at the moment: really feminine silhouettes, big earrings and hair accessories. My shirt-dress is not far from that either: looking at it, it makes me think of the kind of dresses Self Portrait used to do a few years ago with the many ruffles, but a bit more office appropriate with the shirt sleeves.

This might have been my favourite outfit of this year, but I am more curious of which is yours. This just gave me an idea…should I do a blog post about this year’s outfits that you liked the most on Instagram based on Impressions?

The “R” word on everybody’s lips – Raffia

Raffia is in the air…hopefully not as much “in the air” as it is in my room, but you get what I mean. It is definitely the season for it, but even before it was hyped, raffia has slowly become my way of infusing a bit of summer into the box our room is. When you hear it, you might be thinking of hats, bags in all shape and forms and maybe even earrings and shoes, but my passion for it does not stop at clothes.

I can’t say that I’ve been into home decor because we are still renting the flat that we live in so we can’t do much to it. However, Paul and I recently discovered that when it comes to decor we are maximalists. Probably, we weren’t before but at some point we’ve put up a big board where I’d pin all my magazine cuts that I liked at that particular moment (I maybe change it once a month). The room started feeling so cosy and much more “us”. So we realised that we are that kind of people who need their room to have a personality. As much as I appreciate minimalism visually, I could not live in a minimalist place.

So where is the place where a maximalist can still find cute things in the budget? (except a flee market / Car boots) Ikea! So at the moment we have one big raffia cube and a few raffia plant pots that we’ve attached to the wall and I use them as makeup brush holders. On top of that, my eyes are doing the “Puss in boots” trick every time I see a ratan lamp shade…so there will be some changes coming forward. Can it be the summer fever that got me into this? Or is it really that my home decor instinct is starting to take shape?

Just like in the previous post, I will go back through our photos and attach the ones where I am wearing anything raffia, plus a few more inspo items that might make you feel you’re on holiday…even though you’re caught in traffic (and hopefully not driving and reading).

Summer kisses!
